Portugal: Fatima, Bishops’ Plenary Assembly. Election of President, Synodal Path, and protection of children

The 214th Plenary Assembly of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference is taking place in Fatima this week and marks a particularly important time in the life of the Catholic Church in Portugal. The meeting brings together all diocesan and auxiliary bishops for a number of structural decisions, most notably the election of the new President of the Lusitanian Episcopal Conference, since the incumbent President, mgr. José Ornelas, has ended his second term and, in compliance with the applicable Statute, he cannot be re-elected. The key point of the Assembly is therefore the election of the new President, the Vice President, the members of the Permanent Council, the Secretary and the Presidents of the Episcopal Commissions. The appointees will take office straightaway for a three-year term that will end in 2029. As well as the election, the agenda includes other items that are quite sensitive for the life of the Lusitanian Church: protection of children and vulnerable adults (including a review of the current state of measures taken and still-unsolved challenged), Synodal Process (moving along the global path proposed by the Pope and the way it is experienced in Portuguese dioceses), the Secretariat-General’s 2025 financial report, and financial redress for sexual abuse cases, an issue that still requires discernment and clear pastoral and administrative decisions.
