A screening of 341 online traders that offered Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts found that 30% of them mentioned incorrect discounts, without using the right price of reference, which is the lowest price charged in the last 30 days. 36% tried to add optional items to the consumers’ trolley (four traders out of ten did not ask for express consent). 18% used aggressive selling techniques, such as stating that a product was about to sell out or using countdown timers (and, in over one half of these cases, practices were deceitful because they were false). These are “illegal practices under EU consumer law”, a notice from Brussels says. Following such screening, the decision to take action against the involved companies is left to national consumer authorities.
