Spain: Madrid, national congress of pro-life associations. “Recovering Consciousness”

Today and tomorrow, the Spanish Federation of Pro-Life Associations is holding a national congress at the headquarters of the CEU San Pablo University in Madrid. The event – the Federation’s website reads – will be attended by numerous experts in medicine, bioethics, law and social care. Entitled “Recovering Consciousness”, the congress “aims to reflect on contemporary challenges related to the beginning and end of life, as well as on the social and personal impact of decisions affecting human dignity”, the organisers explained. The president of the Spanish Federation of Pro-Life Associations, Alicia Latorre, will deliver the opening speech. The congress addresses topical medical and ethical issues: from palliative perinatal care to a reflection on the “unreasonableness of new rights”. The first day of work will continue with a report on the social response to those expressing the desire to die, and will conclude with a speech on the limits and meaning of the medical profession. Saturday 28 February will open with a round table on the defence of life in Europe. This will be followed by a presentation from gynaecologist José Ignacio Sánchez Méndez, who will present what is being announced as the world’s largest study on the so-called NaProTechnology (Natural Procreative Technology) as a medical alternative in the field of fertility. With “a multidisciplinary approach and testimonies with a strong human impact, the congress aims to establish itself as a space for reflection and education on the defence of life in all its stages, in a social context characterised by intense bioethical debates”.
