On February 24th 2026, the President of the European Council, António Costa, will go to Kiev in Ukraine along with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to celebrate the fourth anniversary of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. During their visit, Brussels’ premises inform, they will attend the official memorial ceremony to commemorate the four years of war. In addition, they will visit an energy infrastructure site damaged by Russia’s missile attacks. Moreover, Costa and von der Leyen will have a trilateral meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Then, the leaders will take part in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing convened by French President Emmanuel Macron and by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. “As we approach four years of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, we pledge to keep supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes until a fair and lasting peace can be attained, thus ensuring the safety of Ukraine and Europe”. “On 24 February 2022, Russia launched an unprovoked, unjustified, and illegal war against Ukraine, violating its sovereignty and international law”, Costa stated. “Since that day, the European Union has stood staunch and steadfast in solidarity with the Ukrainian people — with those who have lost loved ones, those who have been wounded, and all who continue to endure this unjust suffering. Four years later, we reaffirm that our support remains strong, united, and unwavering”.
