Spain: Barcelona, new humanitarian corridor for Ukraine leaving from the Sagrada Familia

In Barcelona, at 9.00am on Friday 20th February, the crypt of the Sagrada Familia will be hosting the official ceremony and the departure of the 42nd “Humanitarian Corridor – Caravan of Kindness”, promoted by the Convent of Santa Clara Foundation to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The day – as stated in a notice by the Foundation – will start with a Mass officiated by the Archbishop of Barcelona, card. Juan José Omella. Then, the ambulances that will set off on a journey of thousands of kilometres to the Ukrainian territory will be blessed. Authorities, leaders from the social and business worlds, and volunteers will see off “a departure that, apart from its logistic value, also wants to have a strong symbolic value”. The convoy will consist of 15 vehicles (10 ambulances, 3 pick-up trucks, an all-terrain vehicle and a car) loaded with health supplies, medicines, power generators and emergency equipment. They are “resources that can make all the difference between life and death in hospitals – that are stretched to the limit – and in areas that are continually bombed”, the notice points out. Since the start of Russia’s military invasion in 2022, the Convent of Santa Clara Foundation has organised 42 humanitarian corridors for Ukraine. In addition to sending ambulances and tons of material supplies, its field work has helped evacuate thousands of wounded or vulnerable people.
