At the Milano-Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK) and the Evangelical Church of Germany (EKD) will jointly provide pastoral care to the German team. The Catholic Olympic chaplain Elisabeth Keilmann, the Protestant Olympic chaplain Thomas Weber, and the Protestant Paralympic chaplain Christian Bode will provide private and ecumenical care to the athletes, team members, staff and family members. Elisabeth Keilmann will attend both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games. Her job is clear: “For the athletes, the Winter Games mean many years of training, a tight programme, and huge expectations. For us, pastoral care means: supporting them, persevering with them, and reminding them that a person’s value does not depend on the ranking”. In addition to one-to-one pastoral care, religious meetings and retreats, including group sharing events to strengthen the community, and a daily spiritual reflection on a dedicated app will also be included. The Bishop of Passau, mgr. Stefan Oster, sports director at DBK, pointed out: “The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are an outstanding event for worldwide sports, and I am grateful that our two main Christian churches have a chance to provide pastoral care to the athletes and to their teams. For some athletes, physical and psychological pressure is huge. A talk with a chaplain can be a great consolation”.
