Netherlands: consecrated life, afternoons in the monasteries to “experience” life in prayer

For several years now, in the Netherlands some women religious communities have been organising introductory afternoons in their monasteries named “Can you hear me?”. Young women are invited to experience monastic life during those days. In this 2026, six male monasteries too decided to open their doors to young men, so they can experience monastic life. Such events are targeted at young people who wish to consider whether monastic life can be suitable for them. During a “Can you hear me?” afternoon, the sisters or friars speak of their life and their call.  Guests can take part in guided tours too and have plenty of time to ask questions and exchange views on their life choices. The afternoons end with a meal and a party. Through such afternoons, many young women have already started a programme of participation and guidance with a monastic community. Now, the Capuchin Friars of Velp, the Franciscans of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Jesuits and the Friars of the Blessed Sacrament of Amsterdam, the Benedictines of Egmond and the Augustinians of Utrecht have joined this initiative too.
