EU Parliament: “we stand with the people of Iran, cease repressions”. A motion of censure against the EU Commission has been defeated

In a resolution adopted at the end of the plenary session, the MEPs express “their outrage at the repression and mass murders being perpetrated by the Iranian regime against protesters in Iran”. In the non-binding resolution, adopted with 562 votes for, 9 votes against and 57 abstentions, the EU Parliament asks the Iranian authorities under Ali Khamenei’s control to “immediately end violence against peaceful protesters, halt all executions, and cease the murder and repression of civilians”. As it expresses “full solidarity with the people of Iran and their brave and legitimate protest movement, it strongly condemns the widespread, intentional and disproportionate use of force by security forces”. Also today, the MEPs defeated a motion of censure brought against the European Commission. The motion, brought by the “Patriots for Europe” group”, has been defeated with 165 votes for, 390 votes against and 10 abstentions. According to the EU Parliament’s regulations, a motion of censure brought against the EU Commission can be submitted to the Presidency by one tenth of the members that make up the floor, that is, 72 MEPs. Votes are cast by roll call and, for a motion to be adopted, it must be backed by the majority of two thirds of the votes, provided it also represents the majority of the MEPs.
