Greenland: an exchange of letters between Danish Bishop Kozon and the Greenland community. “The communion of the Church supports us”

“Over the last few weeks and especially in the last few days, Greenland has been in everyone’s thoughts. Great concern and anxiety have filled lots of people across the world but, mostly in Greenland and Denmark, normal people and politicians”. This is the beginning of a letter that the Danish Bishop of Copenhagen wrote on January 16th to the Parish Priest of Nuuk, the Franciscan Tomaž Majcene, and to the parishioners of Christ the Kind, the only Catholic Parish on the Arctic island that is linked with the Danish Diocese. “Many things have been upset all over the world”, the Bishop writes on, “peace and stability are at a standstill. More than ever, we need to be strengthened by the hope that the Jubilee Year that we have just ended has presented us with”. Then, the Bishop called on the island’s community to “trust God’s mercy and providence, that it may guide the rulers of the world and make them open up to His wisdom”. Mgr. Kozon ensured he is on their side and thanked them “for their presence and testimony in Greenland”. Now, the letter has been posted on the Facebook page of the small community, and the Parish Priest immediately replied by thanking the Bishop “for the attention you have paid us in such an intense time”. “It is very important for us to feel such closeness and solidarity”, Father Tomaž went on, ensuring the Bishop and his ministry of his prayers and his gratitude “for the communion of the Church that supports us, even in difficult times”.
