Denmark: the Year of St Ansgar, “the Apostle of the North”, starting now. Ecumenical celebrations, attended by card. Parolin

For Christians in Denmark, 2026 is ushering in a year of celebrations for the 1200th anniversary of the arrival of St Ansgar (Oscar), the Apostle of the North, in the Nordic country. A Benedictine monk born in France, he arrived in Denmark in 826 along with his fellow-brother Aubert, in the retinue of King Harald. His mission was a troubled one, but Ansgar’s missionary passion never died out. to celebrate the Saint, according to the website of the Diocese of Copenhagen, there will be Catholic and Protestant events in different places across the country all through the year. This solemn anniversary will be officially opened on Saturday January 24th by the ecumenical Vespers in the Church of Our Lady, co-chaired by the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and by the Lutheran Bishop of Copenhagen, Peter Skov-Jakobsen. On Sunday, January 25th, the Cardinal will officiate Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral of Copenhagen. The programme, which is still to be completed, also lists an ecumenical service on Easter Monday, April 6th, and a “pilgrimage of Ansgar” in October 2026.
