“I ask all people of good will to join me in prayer for the person who was killed, for her loved ones and for our community.” This was stated by the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda, after an ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, 37, an American citizen and mother of three children, during an immigration enforcement operation. The incident occurred yesterday morning in south Minneapolis. “We continue to live at a time in this country when we need to lower the temperature of rhetoric, put an end to fear-driven speculation and begin to see all people as created in the image and likeness of God,” the Archbishop stressed, specifying that this applies “both to our immigrant sisters and brothers and to our elected officials and to those entrusted with enforcing the laws”. The Archbishop recalled “the repeated call of the Catholic bishops of the United States that we come together as a nation and pass meaningful immigration reform that does justice to all parties”. “The longer we refuse to address this issue in the political arena, the more divisive and violent it becomes,” he concluded.
