One in three children in the UK is at risk of going hungry this Christmas, and for their families, the biggest concern is survival, not presents, as parents are forced to go without food themselves in order to feed their children. These are the findings of a report entitled Beyond Belief by Christians Against Poverty, an ecumenical Christian organisation committed to fighting poverty, which has helped over 33,000 Britons out of debt since 2010. The report also shows the important role that Christian churches and organisations in the UK play in providing assistance to the poorest. Indeed, over the past five years, about 12.5 million adults in the UK, that is 23% of the entire population, said they have been helped by a local church or Christian organisation. For some 35 million UK citizens, that is 65% of the population, Christian churches and organisations will play an important role in providing support to families and individuals facing hardships over the coming year. About half of young adults aged 18 to 34 (49%) reported that they, a family member or a friend have received support from a local church or Christian organisation over the past five years. Christians Against Poverty has also launched an appeal to raise £300,000 (over €342,000) to help British families in debt this Christmas.
