Austria: overall 1.07 billion euros’ donations raised in 2024. Ruth Williams (FVA director), “Austrian charity sector is largely supported by families”

The 2025 donations report presented today by Fundraising Verband Austria (FVA – an Austrian fundraising association) certifies that over one billion euros was donated in 2024: overall, donations amount to approximately 1.07 billion euros, which is 0.5% less than in 2023; the record-breaking 1.1 billion euros of 2022 is still unequalled. “Private donations are steady, but corporate ones are decreasing or stagnating”, explained Ruth Williams, managing director of FVA, who attributed “great resilience” to the Austrian charity sector – 82% of which is supported by families – despite the inflation and multiple crises. In the list of the 100 best non-profit organisations, Caritas ranked second with 94.31 million euros’ donations, behind the Red Cross (110.26 million euros). Further down the list come SOS Children’s Villages (46.46 million euros), Doctors Without Borders (32.26 million euros) and Greenpeace (24.47 million euros). The Three Kings Campaign ranked seven with 20.74 million euros, followed by Missio with 18.03 million euros. The charity organisation of the German Evangelical Church, Diakonie, is twelfth on the list with 13.83 million euros. Two thirds of all donations have been allocated to social services, public health and people with disabilities, accounting for approximately 29.5% of total donations, amounting to 120 to 130 million euros. The year was also affected by devastating floods in eastern Austria: the “Austria Helps Austria” campaign raised a total of 26.5 million euros. Donations for support in the event of natural catastrophes have increased by 4%, reaching 30% mainly all allocated to animals (33%) and children (32%). The first five target donations include support to homelessness organisations (24%) and the fight against hunger in the world (18%). And it is precisely international donations that have most remarkably decreased: 23% of donations, 2% less than in 2023. Lukas Wank, global responsibility expert, points out that “people try to psychologically distance themselves from the multiple crises in Sahel, in Ukraine or in Gaza. But when problems disappear from public consciousness, they also lose political weight”.
