In the Netherlands, the Catholic Church has borrowed Pope Leo XIV’s motto, “In the One, we are one”, as the theme of Saint Willibrord Sunday, on November 9th, that for Dutch Catholics is a day for raising awareness of ecumenism. Such Saint, who lived between the VII and the VIII centuries, came from Ireland to preach the Gospel in the Netherlands, where he founded churches, monasteries and even fortresses. As he is the patron saint of the Dutch Church province, he is celebrated very solemnly. In this 2025, the Saint’s Day falls on the day of the dedication of the Lateran basilica, the Pope’s episcopal seat. KVO, the Catholic Association for Ecumenism that leads the Day, wanted to emphasise, in its communication campaign, “the continuity of the current papacy with the previous one”. KVO’s website provides parish communities with cues for reflection, resources on current ecumenical issues, such as the new text of the Charta Oecumenica of the European Churches, and prayers approved by the National Council for the Liturgy of eucharistic celebrations. In addition, donations will be collected in the communities the next weekend to support the work of the Catholic Association for Ecumenism.
