Council of Europe: Strasbourg, three days of debates about “Democracy at risk: how can we revive it?”

The World Forum for Democracy, the Council of Europe’s yearly meeting of politicians, activists, experts, men of culture and young people from all over the world, will be back from 5th to 7th November. “Democracy at risk: how can we revive it?” is the topic chosen for 2025, aiming at “analysing the reasons for citizens’ disengagement from democracy and exploring solutions to strengthen democratic culture, fight disinformation and encourage participation”. According to the programme, the Forum will be opened (5th November) by three plenary sessions about as many topics (How is the transformation of media impacting Democracy, How can culture and cultural policy strengthen Democracy, What future for citizens’ participation). Thursday morning will be spent in seven workshops for the presentation and discussion of ground-breaking initiatives. In the afternoon, another seven workshops will be trying to find answers to specific challenges advanced by the member states of the Council of Europe. On 7th November, a plenary session will be dealing with “the role of history teaching in grounding democracy” and, before finishing, some time for a “conversation of generations” and the announcement of the “Democracy Innovation Award”. All this will be topped up by local and international artistic performances and four exhibitions (the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s accession to the Council of Europe, political prisoners in Belarus, Maltese art, and the famous Aubusson tapestry “El Holocaust”). The Forum is part of the process for a “New Democratic Pact”, an initiative launched by Secretary General Alain Berset.
