From 17 to 19 October, the Spanish Bishops’ Conference is organising the 54th meeting of rectors and formators of major seminaries in Madrid. The central theme of the event is “Authority and freedom in the seminary: canonical and formative aspects”. The meeting will begin in the afternoon of Friday, 17 October, with the reception of the participants and a moment of prayer. The opening remarks will be delivered by Mgr Jesús Pulido Arriero, President of the Episcopal Commission for the Clergy and Seminaries, and by Mgr Jesús Vidal Chamorro, President of the Episcopal Subcommittee for Seminaries. On the first day, Father Carlos López Segovia, Deputy Secretary for General Affairs of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference, will address participants on the theme “Authority and decision-making in the seminary: canonical aspects of the formation process towards the priesthood”. On Saturday, 18 October, Father Segovia will lead a second reflection on “The authority of formators and the rights of seminarians”, which will be followed by group work and a roundtable discussion aimed at sharing good practices in community discernment and decision-making in seminaries. In the afternoon, Lidia Troya Cáceres, head of the Repara project, will delve into the theme of “Healing wounded freedoms: the power of healthy authority in the formative accompaniment of the seminary”. On Sunday, 19 October, Lidia Troya Cáceres will address the theme of “Preventing the misuse of power in the seminary”, after which the last session of group work will begin. Before the end of the meeting, participants will be presented with information about specific issues related to the Episcopal Subcommittee for Seminaries.
