Today, the Council of Europe is celebrating the International Day of Democracy by launching the online platform of the “New Democratic Pact for Europe”. The Pact – as explained by the pan-European organisation in a statement – “is a strategic and political process to reinforce democracy’s foundations, amplify its benefits and innovate its form as our societies confront challenges like democratic backsliding, disinformation, impunity and authoritarianism”. The premise is that today “democracy is undermined”, so “a collective and inclusive process” is needed to reinforce democracy’s foundations and “make it tangible for everyone, especially younger generations”. As well as being the main place to go for news, resources and events about the Pact, the Platform will also be opening a first stage of a consultation that by 2026 will lead to understand how future work will have to be shaped in three selected areas: learning and practising democracy, protecting democracy and innovating. “The website of the new Democratic Pact”, secretary general Alain Berset explained, “is an invitation to learn, engage, and imagine the democracy Europe needs in a world where the centre of gravity is shifting. Because democracy lives in the decisions we make together”.
