Yesterday afternoon, on the third day of the General Chapter of the Order of Saint Augustine, elections were held to appoint those responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the proceedings. The scrutineers, moderators, members of the legal and editorial commissions, the Chapter Prior and the treasurer were elected. After a break, the members of the Chapter listened to Msgr. John Joseph Kennedy, secretary for the Disciplinary Section of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The bishop outlined the Dicastery’s work in the protection of minors and in addressing the most serious cases, often linked to abuses and crimes against the faith. He encouraged the Augustinians to invest in canonical training so as to address cases with a fair and transparent approach. He also announced the upcoming publication of the third version of the Vademecum, which will contain indications for greater information sharing with the victims’ families, “to respond to their vital need for truth”, without ever forgetting the right of the accused to a defence. The day ended with work in groups divided by language, with a focus on the Order’s responsibility in the areas of training and prevention.
