(Strasbourg) “A strong Europe in a changing world” where the challenges of “defence, rearmament, migration, competitiveness, de-bureaucratisation, and simplification” can be met. These are the goals presented by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, at the press conference following the presentation in Strasbourg of the programme of the Danish Presidency of the European Council for the upcoming six months. Taking the floor together with the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, Roberta Metsola recalled the challenges facing the EU institutions. In a previous debate at the European Parliament, MEPs had repeatedly highlighted the issue of migration. “An effective management is needed for a just migration that will benefit those in need of protection and help, with clear regulations to stop human trafficking, and a rapid system of repatriation for those who enter illegally. Only in this way can migratory flows be safe and sustainable”. In several parts of her speech, President Metsola focused on the European rearmament and the way to finalise the latest Defence Omnibus package. On the economic front, she focused on the long-term budget (MFF): “We will present our proposals to the Commission next week, for a strong and strategic budget that matches our ambitions”. As she responded to questions from reporters, Metsola recalled the importance of green transition policies and the need “to learn to speak consistently, so that the institutions’ position is clear to global stakeholders”. An example of this is the ongoing negotiation with the United States on tariffs.
