“The bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Marseille think of you and pray for you in the dramatic situation that your countries are going through”. Nine bishops of southern France wrote this in a message addressed to Cardinals Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, and Dominique Mathieu, Archbishop of Tehran-Ispahan of the Latins. “Today, we have listened to the moving words of Jesus, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”, the message continues, “the only words capable of quenching the thirst for revenge that perpetuates violence”. The bishops pray for the world leaders: “May they have the determination and will to seek peace for your people who suffer because of war”, and that Prophet Isaiah’s words may come true: “One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again”. The French bishops also pray for cooperation with “institutions and people of goodwill to lead the fight for peace and eradicate the fratricide of the origins that wounds our humanity”. At the end of their message, the French bishops give assurance to their brother bishops that on 27 June, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, all Masses in their dioceses will be celebrated “for you, for the people you serve, and for peace in the world”.
