EU-NATO: report on transatlantic cooperation. “Steadfast defenders of peace”. Defence spending must be increased

The tenth progress report on the implementation of the 74 common proposals endorsed by the EU and NATO — which is the basis for cooperation between the two institutions — has been presented to the Council of the European Union. “NATO and the EU remain steadfast defenders of international peace and security and the rules-based international order”, the report reads; in light of the current security challenges, “further strengthening of the transatlantic cooperation” is needed. There is therefore a need to work towards “an even more robust, coherent and complementary” partnership aimed at strengthening defensive preparedness. The report emphasises the need to increase European defence spending, address shortfalls, expand industrial capacity and ramp up defence production while also highlighting the progress made in cooperation over the past 12 months. Political dialogue has “increased substantially” to bolster mutual understanding, increase interactions and further strengthen cooperation in all areas of the partnership. Countering hybrid threats, as well as resilience and preparedness in general, have been areas of cooperation. The cooperation topics addressed in the report include cybersecurity and defence, space, innovation and research in the defence industry, maritime security, training, and support to Ukraine. The report finally reaffirms that “the EU and NATO remain firmly committed to further strengthen, deepen and expand their mutually reinforcing and beneficial cooperation”.
