EU Commission: hazardous non-food products, 4 thousand alerts in a year. Cosmetics and toys at the top of the list

Today, the European Commission issued its yearly report on the Safety Gate, the European Rapid Alert System on dangerous non-food products. Such report provides an overview of the dangerous products notified in the Safety Gate in 2024. “Last year – it says – the System recorded 4,137 alerts, the highest number ever recorded since the launch of the System in 2003. Such a rise in the number of alerts is proof of the increasing effectiveness of and confidence in the Safety Gate System, since the authorities are using the platform more often to report and deal with potential threats to consumers’ health”. In addition, such report describes the follow-up measures taken by the national authorities of the member states of the EU, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein to avoid harming consumers and to stop the sale of dangerous products. Last year, the Safety Gate points out, cosmetics (36%) remained the most frequently reported products presenting threats to human health, followed by toys (15%), electrical appliances (10%), motor vehicles (9%) and chemicals (6%). “Chemical ingredients were the main source of risk in almost half the alerts. Reported dangerous chemicals included cadmium, nickel and lead in jewellery as well as allergenic fragrances in body oils and synthetic chemicals used to soften plastics, for instance in some clothes”. “97% of the reported cosmetics contain BMHCA, a banned synthetic fragrance which can harm the reproductive system and may cause skin sensitisation”.
