For countries that are members of the Council of Europe, the month of April is a time for celebrating the wealth of Roma history, language and culture that contributed to Europe’s common heritage and cultural diversity. The April calendar – with the title “Opre Roma!”, “Stand Up, Roma” – includes national events in over 30 member countries, some of which about the promotion and protection of the rights of Roma communities. In particular, the Council of Europe will be organising a meeting of dialogue with Roma and Traveller civil society (2-3 April) about the role of civil society. Also in Strasbourg, the Council of Europe supports the play “Romaland” (2-4 April, Maillon Theatre) directed by Anestis Azas and Prodromos Tsinikoris, who explore the lives of the Romani people in Greece. Then, the premises of the pan-European institution will host a workshop on “The Roma Youth Together” (5-11 April) with 35 boys and girls from 21 countries experiencing a process of sharing experiences and learning how to become agents of change and multipliers. On the International Romani Day (8 April), a ceremony with Michael O’Flaherty, Commissioner for Human Rights, will pay tribute to the identity, resilience and cultural heritage of the Romani people. In Brussels, on the same day, a high-level meeting at the European Parliament will be addressing the inclusion of Roma history and culture into school curricula.
