This morning, before the establishment of the 21st German Bundestag with the inauguration session, an ecumenical celebration took place in the Catholic Cathedral of St Hedwig in Berlin. In addition to the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and to the government members, lots of outgoing and new members of the Bundestag attended the ceremony. In his sermon, the Director of the Catholic Office in Berlin, mgr. Karl Jüsten, stated: “If one accepts a special Parliament or Government office and takes an oath as well, one can add ‘So God help me’. […] Such addition acknowledges that there is something greater than one’s reality”. In his sermon, mgr. Jüsten mentioned God’s trust in man and asked how much each of us trusts others: “Trust is one of the most valuable currencies in today’s democracies. Whoever takes an office must be supported by citizens. Therefore, all those who take an office or a position must fulfil it so that they can build trust with their voters”. In his welcome speech, the leader of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany to the federal institutions, Bishop Anne Gidion, thanked the Members of Parliament who left the Bundestag and welcomed the new ones, expressing her respect for all of them and speaking directly to them: “You represent the demos, the people, to the best of your knowledge and your conscience. I hope you may feel supported in this. By people who trust you. By the parties you belong to. By your skills and much more. And by God”.
