Jubilee 2025: Austria, a special procedure to rejoin the Church after an abjuration. Diocese of St. Pölten, “a time of reconciliation”

During Holy Year 2025, the Diocese of St. Pölten, in Austria, wishes to make things easier for devotees who abjured the Church to rejoin it: an online form has been specially worked out for the purpose. “The Holy Year provides a special opportunity to find your place within the community of the Church. It is a time of reconciliation, new beginnings and grace”, the Diocese’s website reads. According to information from the Diocese’s spokesperson, Thomas Fischbacher, since the beginning of the year about 70 people from the West of Lower Austria have already seized the opportunity to rejoin the Catholic Church, which largely exceeds the usual number of people rejoining it at this time. 90% of these people comes from the Diocese, but some come from the rest of Austria too; the form is mainly used by people under 35. There are two available options: one can fill in and send the form online, then they will be contacted by a member of the Diocese’s staff to discuss what to do next. Part of the interactive form involves saying the Catholic “Creed” in front of the screen and uploading the Certificate of Baptism and a valid ID card with a photo: the return to the Church will be officially confirmed by a letter from the Bishop. But, if one prefers to have a personal interview, one can simply book an appointment with a delegated priest. The Austrian Bishops’ Conference too is promoting the return to the Catholic Church on its website, partly because of the high number of abjurations. The website www.eintreten.at provides information about the steps required and suggests that users should contact a local parish priest or a diocesan contact person for an initial interview that may reassure them about matters of faith as well as the problems and deficiencies within the Church.
