Bishop Gerhard Feige of Magdeburg called for more honesty and sincerity during the current Bundestag election campaign. “Even if the aim is not to deliberately and brazenly mislead or deceive, half-truths and simplifications, vague promises and evasive answers often play a role for strategic reasons”, he said in his Sunday homily at Magdeburg Cathedral. There is a “certain tragedy” in the fact that politicians who strive for open and honest communication find less and less approval than those “who come along with the poison of simple solutions”. The bishop made an appeal to the faithful: “Let us not leave our world to fanatics and extremists, psychopaths and oligarchs, tyrants and dictators”. Mgr Feige reiterated the need to use “all our strength and resources to promote truth and justice, solidarity and charity, decency and respect, peaceful coexistence and the inviolability of the dignity of every human being”. Christians in particular are asked to engage proactively: “Even if we are not asked, we should set aside indifference and fear, and intervene decisively and courageously in current political developments with our Christian ideals”.
