The Federation of German Catholic Youth (BDKJ) makes an appeal: “Put young people at the centre of political decisions – now and in the future”. The BDJK calls on politicians to get closer to young people in the ongoing electoral campaign, to engage with them, and to take their concerns seriously by constantly taking them into account in future decisions. “One month before the federal elections, we have to realise that young people play a very small role in the electoral campaign of the parties. Youth perspectives are hardly mentioned, even if they represent the present and the future of our society”, the Federal President of the BDKJ, Lena Bloemacher, lamented. “This is a catastrophic signal for young people’s confidence. This is not just a serious political omission, but a slap in the face of a generation that has repeatedly and actively campaigned for climate justice, social participation and a society characterised by low discrimination and intergenerational fairness. This political attitude is a threat to our society because it goes against our democratic commitment”. “In the election programmes, children and young people are almost only viewed as students and future workers. Their diversity, their commitment, and the reality of their lives remain largely ignored”, Lena Bloemacher stressed. “We therefore call on politicians to engage with young people and listen to what they have to say on current issues”. The BDKJ also exhorts everyone to go to the polls on 23 February. “Vote for democratic parties who are committed to a better world”.
