“’So that they may all be oneʼ (Jn 17:21). As Christians, we cannot remain indifferent to this prayer, because the words of Jesus Christ are still relevant and challenge our conscience”, wrote Cardinal Lucian Muresan, Major Archbishop of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church and President of the Romanian Bishops’ Conference, in his message for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. “Restoring the unity of all Christians – the Cardinal continued – is a requirement of our Christian identity and an invitation addressed to each one of us”. Prayer events for Christian unity are being organised these days in Bucharest, Iasi, Oradea, Timisoara, Alba Iulia and Bistrita, with the participation of various Churches: Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic, Orthodox, Evangelical Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed and Unitarian. In Oradea, there will be a collection to support the Elderly Home of the Unitarian Church. Patriarch Daniel of the Orthodox Church recalled in his message that 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, an event that “gives the Church the opportunity to highlight that man’s living relationship with God is rooted in the faith in Jesus Christ the Saviour”. “In the current context”, he added, “marked by numerous moral, economic and social crises, as well as by devastating military conflicts, we are all called to bear witness to the world of our faith in Jesus Christ the Saviour and gestures of merciful love inspired by faith”.
