European Union: Erasmus+, learning abroad. In one year, opportunities for 1.3 million students, teachers, trainers

In 2023, Erasmus+ supported nearly 32,000 projects involving over 84,500 organisations, thereby providing 1.3 million students, learners, professors, teachers, trainers, youth workers, sport coaches and young people with learning opportunities abroad. The programme was supported by a total budget of over 4.5 billion, 12.5 % more than the previous year. This is according to the data provided in the Erasmus+ Annual Report 2023, published by the European Commission. Last year, 200,000 of the Erasmus+ participants were people with fewer opportunities, including migrants and people with disabilities, as well as EU citizens living in remote areas or facing socioeconomic difficulties, in line with the programme’s commitment to prioritise inclusion and diversity and to become more accessible for small organisations. Also in 2023, 31,890 people – including young people and teaching and administrative staff in all fields of education and training – undertook mobility activities and followed training activities to acquire digital skills. Moreover, as one of the objectives of the Erasmus+ programme is to strengthen European identity and values, it has financed 1,460 cooperation projects supporting democratic participation with €390.6 million, thereby contributing to a more democratic European Union. Since its start in 1987, the programme has given 15.1 million people a chance to study, train, work and volunteer abroad.
