“We think of him as one of us”, says Monsignor Marco Prastaro, Bishop of Asti, describing the close bond between Pope Francis and the diocese of Asti, the birthplace of the Pope’s family, where he made a private visit in 2022. The Catholic community of Asti has gathered in prayer for the Pope in these days of deep concern over his state of health. “There is an outpouring of affection and support,” adds the prelate, highlighting the prayer initiatives organised by the diocese and the emotional involvement of the Pope’s cousins.

Is there a special bond that links Pope Francis to the Diocese of Asti?

There certainly is. Pope Francis was born in this region and, in a certain sense, we consider him “one of us.” We were gifted with his visit in 2022, on the occasion of his visit to his cousins. He spent a whole weekend with us, in what was defined as a “long-awaited meeting”, and a very meaningful event for our diocese.

His cousins, Carla and Delia. How do they feel about the ongoing situation?

Of course they are worried, even if, as all true people of Piedmont, they keep their composure.

The eldest, Carla, told me with absolute confidence: “He’s a fighter. I’m sure he will recover and resume his path.”

She also said that she hoped they would finally help him get some rest.

How is the diocesan community going through these hours?

On Sunday, all the parishes of the diocese offered prayers for the Holy Father. Some parishes held special prayers, such as the Rosary before Mass. Tomorrow we will have a meeting of the Diocesan Council and we will decide whether to organise further community prayer initiatives.

Is Pope Francis a much-loved figure in Asti?

There is no doubt about this. As I said, if I may use the jargon of the younger generation, he is ‘one of us’. There are deep ties, his family is originally from these lands. The Pope is an honorary citizen of Asti and this closeness can be seen in the special affection he receives from the community.

We feel particularly “entitled” to love and care for him.

Did the congregation demonstrate their affection for the Pope?

Certainly, and I will share with you one particularly touching message. A lady wrote to me: “I am very concerned about the health of Pope Francis and I pray all day like I never have before. Please forgive me, but the Holy Father is like a guiding star for me. I pray as he teaches us, but I cannot bring myself to be at peace.” This, I believe, is an accurate description of the feelings of many of our faithful, even here in Asti. For us he is like a father, like a member of the family.

Your Excellency, what are your feelings as you accompany the Holy Father?

Everyone is worried. We would like to see him and talk to him, but it’s not possible at the moment. This is a time of silent waiting and prayer. He named me Bishop of Asti. I had the privilege of welcoming him to my home during his visit. I fondly remember the dinner we shared with the nuns: the atmosphere was very warm and convivial.

The Pope never failed to show me his deep affection and esteem, which inevitably created a special bond. I think many bishops have experienced this: Francis has an extraordinary ability to make each person feel valued and appreciated for who they are.

Did you have this feeling of closeness in your meeting with him?

On every occasion I met him, he always knew who I was and said a friendly joke or made a personal comment. On one occasion he said something that impressed me and I realised that he really did remember people and situations. He has an incredible memory and an extraordinary ability to relate to others.
