EU Commission: consumer protection authorities, actions to protect gamers. McGrath, “half of Europeans play online”

Today, the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Network has launched EU-level coordinated actions in relation to nine video games companies, “aiming to strengthen the protection of gamers’ rights”. Commissioner for Consumer Protection Michael McGrath explained: “Roughly half of Europeans play video games, making gaming a major part of our digital economy and everyday lives. With that reach comes responsibility. The industry must ensure that its games do not expose players – especially children – to harmful or unfair practices. The game must be fair, and the rules must be respected. National authorities, with the support of the Commission, will make sure they are enforced”. Today’s coordinated actions aim at ensuring that the following principles are applied: clear and transparent pricing, no concealment of costs (no multiple currencies or currency exchanges that make the real price unclear), no imposition of unwanted currency purchases, clear information before the purchase, respect for the right to withdraw, and the protection of vulnerable consumers.
