Czech Republic: “Forgiveness is not weakness. It is a choice”. A campaign for reconciliation in Brno

“Forgiveness is not weakness. It is a choice”. With these words, the diocese of Brno, in the Czech Republic, launched “Start Where You Are” (Začni, kde jsi), a project focussed on forgiveness, reconciliation and inner freedom. Posters, bills and tramcars have taken the topic out of the churches to also target those people who do not mix with the Christian community. The project was also inspired by the stories of two priests, Jan Bula and Václav Drbola, beatified in Brno last June. Sentenced to death in the Fifties in a political lawsuit, the two priests despite the tortures and injustices suffered reportedly kept a forgiving attitude towards the people who had harmed them. “Forgiveness can make sense even when no apologies come, when the situation remains unfair, and even when a relationship cannot be rebuilt – Pavel Konzbul, Bishop of Brno, explained –. It is important for our inner peace”. The project, involving psychologists and mental health experts too, provides real stories and factual suggestions to deal with anger, pain, disappointment or hurt. Psychologist Magdalena Lavičková pointed out that forgiving does not mean approving what happened, forgetting the pain or necessarily restoring trust: it means “taking care of one’s wounds and finding inner freedom again, leaving one’s hands free to embark on a new journey”.
