“We believers like young people, our children, to be educated to values”, mgr. Tadeusz Wojda, President of the Bishops’ Conference of Poland, said this morning on the occasion of the XIV Education Week, which will be taking place in Poland from 8th to 14th September. The prelate pointed out that catechism lessons in the schools “are the important factor in a proper education”. He also insisted on the need to make sure that, when they grow up, young people are imbued with “respect for their homeland and for other people”. Mgr. Wojda called parents to face “the great challenge of the modern times” with the required effort and dedication. This year’s Education Week takes its title from the appeal “Let’s educate young people together!”. For the occasion, the Bishops’ Conference of Poland sent a message to the students’ parents in which they insist on the key role played by families in educating their children, which is protected by the Polish Constitution. The prelates point out that, as well as the psychological, intellectual and physical spheres, the educational process should include the spiritual sphere as well, since “the need to relate to God is one of man’s natural necessities”. According to a 2023 report by the Catholic agency KAI, 48 per cent of Polish young people state they are believers, while 6 per cent of them define themselves as “deep believers”. Over one half of young people (58.2 per cent) state they root their faith “in family traditions or in the educational process”, while 16.2 per cent “follow the religious example of either parent”.
