Germany: ecumenical celebration to mark anniversary of WWII end on Friday 8 May

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation from Nazism, the celebrations for the German national commemoration will kick-start on Friday, 8 May, with an ecumenical service at the Evangelical Cathedral in Berlin at 10am. The first public television channel in Germany (ARD) will broadcast the celebration live. Attending the service, among others, will be the President of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm; the president of the German Bishops’ Conference (DBK), Mgr. Georg Bätzing; and the president of the working group of the Council of Christian Churches in Germany (ACK), Archpriest Radu Constantin Miron. The liturgy will be guided by Cathedral Pastor Petra Zimmermann. The Biblical words and voices from the past will combine together to form a message: never give up in the struggle for peace and reconciliation. Other representatives of Christian Churches and the Jewish community of Berlin will speak during the liturgy, which will take place without the faithful because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
