“The Holy Father has been informed of the tragedy of the Russian submarine. He expresses his condolences and closeness to the families of the victims and to all those who have been affected by this disaster”, the ad-interim Director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, told journalists. At least 14 sailors were killed when a fire broke out aboard a Russian submarine of the Moscow Marine Corps. The tragedy occurred on Monday, 19 years after the Kursk disaster, but the Russian Ministry of Defence only gave the news yesterday. According to some rumours, the submarine was designed to study and map the sea depths, but it might also have been engaged in intelligence activities. Tomorrow, for the third time, Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to be received in audience by Pope Francis. The last time they met was on 10 June 2015.
