EU-Churches: COMECE and CEC, meeting with Finnish Presidency. Dialogue on common values, rule of law, economy, inclusion

(Brussels) In line with tradition, the representatives of Churches in Europe have met with the presidency in office of the EU: in Helsinki, on Friday 12 July, the delegates of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) and of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) met with the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pekka Haavisto, to discuss the priorities of the semester that has just begun. According to a statement released today, discussion focused on four items that are part of the Finnish agenda: “common values and the rule of law: cornerstones of EU action”; social competitiveness and inclusion; climate action “serving integral human development”; and a comprehensive approach to “security and migration”. The Churches, the statement reads, welcomed the “commitment of the Finnish Presidency to actively engage on the future of Europe, focusing particularly on effective measures to increase sustainable growth, foster security and mitigate climate change”. Finally, the Churches seized the opportunity to highlight that they “are not only universal networks of faith, but also institutions deeply rooted in local realities working for the common good of our societies”.
