COMECE: Balkans and EU, Mgr. Nemet (Bishops’ Conference of Cyril and Methodius) in Brussels

The recent EU Strategy for the Western Balkans and the Sofia Summit have reinforced the perspectives for the European integration of the region, which is also one of the priorities for the current Bulgaria’s Council Presidency and for the upcoming Austrian presidency, starting on 1 July 2018. That is why, as the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) announced in a statement, Bishop Ladislav Nemet, President of the International Bishops’ Conference of St. Cyril and Methodius, will visit Brussels on June 13-15 to meet with “Church authorities and EU officials from the European Commission and the European External Action Service to exchange perspectives on the EU integration for the region of South-East Europe and the role of Churches” in the context of these new perspectives of integration, to explore “the necessary steps that can be taken on the side of the EU, as well as of the Western Balkans”. During his visit, there will also be a public debate, on 14 June, on “Western Balkans and the EU: next steps…?” at the headquarters of COMECE. In view of the Sofia Summit, COMECE had worked in close cooperation with the Bishops’ Conference on a document about this possible integration.
