EU Commission: “Fake news threaten democracy and society”. Code of Good Practice and Media literacy

Il commissario Ue Julian King

(Brussels) “The assault of fake news and misinformation is a serious threat to the security of our societies”. This is why “a clear response, based on more transparency, traceability and reliability, is needed. It is essential for online platforms to prevent their infrastructure being abused by hostile people and protect their users and society”. Today, EU Security commissioner Julian King submitted a number of measures to fight fake news and online misinformation. Such ideas include the development of a EU Code of Good Practice about misinformation, “support to an independent fact-checkers’ network”, and a number of “measures to boost quality journalism and promote media literacy”. “The recent revelations about the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal have very clearly proven that personal data can be misused for elections and come at the right time to remind us that we must take firmer measures to have sound democratic processes”. The European Commission “is making progress in the fight against misinformation to protect European values and security”.
