Pope Francis accepted the renunciation to the pastoral guidance of the diocese of Dromore, in Ireland, submitted by mgr. John McAreavey. The news has been given by the Newsroom of the Holy See today. The Irish bishop had been recently criticised by some local media for the sex scandal, as part of the broader scandal on paedophilia that devastated the Church of Ireland in the last few years. According to the local press, McAreavey has been accused for his decision to celebrate the funeral of a well-known paedophile priest in church about fifteen years ago. A matter, this one, that in the last few weeks has been brought up again by a TV enquiry, in which some victims of such priest had been interviewed. “Following the recent media news that have upset and shocked many people”, McAreavey wrote in a letter to the diocese on March 2nd to explain why he had decided to hand in his resignation, which the Pope has accepted today.
