“On Saturday 20 October, Father Pierre-Yves Fumery was found dead in his presbytery in Gien, France. It is evident that he took his life. Father Pierre-Yves, 38, was in charge of the parishes in Gien. The Bishop of Orleans, Mgr. Jacques Blaquart, informed the Diocese in a statement. Father Pierre-Yves has been a priest since 2014. “We are shocked but we knew he was going through a difficult time”, the bishop said, without giving further explanations, but quoting a sentence from St Paul: “If one member suffers, all members suffer with him”. In his message, the bishop also spoke of “difficult times for our diocesan Church”, referring to the fact that, according to what La Croix reports, a priest from the diocese accused of sexually assaulting a child and the bishop emeritus who failed to report the fact will appear in court on 30 October. Turning his “thoughts” to the parents, families, priests and faithful of the parishes in Gien, the bishop then called on everyone to “pray for one another and trust in Christ, our only hope”. On 18 September, also another 38-year-old priest, Jean-Baptiste Sebe, committed suicide in Rouen.
