“A contradictory approach also permits the suppression of human life in the maternal womb in the name of safeguarding other rights”. Pope Francis said this in his General Audience catechesis today, dedicated to the fifth commandment. “But how can an act that suppresses innocent and defenceless budding human life be therapeutic, civil or simply human?”, Pope Francis asked off the cuff, addressing a crowd of 26,000 in St Peter’s Square. “I ask you: is it right to do away with a human life to solve a problem? What do you think? Is it right or not? Is it right to hire a hitman to solve a problem?”. “One cannot do this, it is not right to do away with a human being, albeit small, to solve a problem. It is like hiring a hitman to solve a problem”, he continued off the cuff, and those present in the square replied unanimously “No”.
