Stepinac’s Canonization: Card. Parolin, “the Pope’s desire is that the issue does not create tensions but helps walk together”

“The canonization of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac is an internal affair of the Catholic Church and we believe that it is important to emphasise that. The Holy Father’s desire, however, is that this matter does not create tensions between the two peoples, but helps them walk together. I believe that the Commission’s work has been helpful and that this process has helped dialogue and mutual understanding”. The Vatican Secretary of State, Card. Pietro Parolin, said this during his visit to Croatia these days, as he answered the questions put to him by journalists about the outcome of the work of the Joint Commission of the Croatian Bishops’ Conference and the Serbian Orthodox Church, responsible for analysing the role of the Blessed Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac in the context of World War II. The documents of the Commission, which did not reach “an unambiguous interpretation”, are now in the hands of Pope Francis. “Historical facts leave wounds that cannot be healed overnight. It is important to stick to the direction in which we are going and work for communion and peace. Ecumenical and interreligious dialogue is a key tool for achieving this goal”, the Cardinal said. The conclusions of the Commission responsible for studying the Medjugorje “phenomenon” are also “in the hands of the Holy Father”, the Secretary of State said in response to another question. The “pastoral care” of pilgrims is just as important as the “supernatural character of events”. It is “the Holy See’s desire to help regulate the phenomenon so that the faithful who come here may listen to the Word of God, celebrate the Sacraments, and live an authentic experience of faith”.
