“This tragedy adds to the sad list of terrorist attacks which have plunged into mourning our country and other countries across the world for several months. Whatever the matrix, this is an unacceptable and intolerable barbarity. Our country was struck to death as we were celebrating our national unity. Now more than ever, our national solidarity must be stronger than terrorism”. This is the reaction of the French Bishops to the tragic news of the terrorist attack in Nice, which struck France on the day the country was celebrating its national feast. The attack, the bishops wrote in a statement released this morning, which has caused the death of 84 people, “indiscriminately targeted men, women, and children”. “The French Bishops’ Conference joins in the suffering of the families and friends of the victims”, the bishops added, assuring them of their prayers. Mgr. Georges Pontier, president of the Bishops’ Conference, has invited all Catholics of France to pray in a special way for the victims of Nice during the Sunday Mass on 17 July.
