(Brussels) – Neuer (Germany), Bonucci (Italy), Hummels (Germany), Alba (Spain), Boateng (Germany), Pogba (France), Matuidi (France), Ronaldo (Portugal), Alli (England), Lewandowski (Poland), Hazard (Belgium). This is the European Football Cup’s “dream team” according to Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, who used to be a footballer himself. “I will watch the opening match with the German national team at home, in Lindau. I have two sisters and two brothers, and we will be watching the match together”, he states. And what is his finest memory about the European football championships? “The win in 1980, when the coach was Jupp Derwall, who played football in my city’s team, in which I played myself”. The EU Parliament’s website posts some of the MEPs’ memories that have to do with the continental football cup. For example, the Belgian Marc Tarabella mentions “Czechoslovakia’s win over Germany in 1976”. The Spanish Santiago Fisas Ayxelà remembers very well his national team winning in 1964, “when – he says – we defeated the Soviet Union at the finals”. But will he be watching the matches this year? “We have the political election – he points out – so I will be busy with the campaign, but I will certainly be watching the matches on TV”.
