CZECH REPUBLIC: CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN SUPPORT OF INITIATIVE ONE OF US” “” “

(Sir Europe – Bratislava) – "We got used to the fact that there are many petitions of various kinds running in the Czech Republic and not all of them make sense. But we need to take into consideration that the European Citizens’ Initiative is a brand new institute with specific emphasis on the participation of citizens in the creation of the legal system and it holds a great deal of importance", explains Kvetoslav Sipr, secretary of the Council for Bioethics of the Czech Bishops’ Conference, inviting all inhabitants of the country to sign the initiative "One of Us" aiming to end the funding of activities destroying human embryos for the purpose of scientific research. Czechs should collect at least 16,500 signatures if they want to meet the required level within the European Union. So far, their number hardly reaches 3,500. According to Sipr, the success of the petition will give a signal to politicians about how important the right to life is to their electors and how much attention they should pay to this issue in the future. The Bishops’ Conference strongly supports the initiative and appreciates "a chance to create a wide community of people who care about the dignity and protection of life, regardless of their political or religious adherence".
