GAZA: ABUSAHLIA (CARITAS), "AN OPEN AIR PRISON. PEOPLE DESERVE TO LIVE"” “” “

"Shocked by the level of poverty noticed in Gaza. All of the Strip is still an open air prison, enclosed by the sea, by Israel’s embargo and now by Egypt’s too". This is how father Raed Abusahlia, General Manager of Caritas Jerusalem, comments with Fides the state of Gaza at the end of a mission that has just been completed by a delegation of the local Caritas locale. Father Abusahlia speaks of the Strip, ruled by the Hamas Islamists, where "the embargo laid down by Israel is crushing the population, nearly one third of whom live under the poverty line. Now, the tunnels that connected that area to Egypt – where all sorts of goods used to be smuggled, turning into a source of income for Hamas’ coffers too – have mostly been blocked at the request of the Egyptian government, which actually keep the Rafah pass closed too".
