(Sir Europe – Srebrenica) – "Eighteen years ago, about 8 thousand people were executed in Srebrenica and its surroundings, while about 30 thousand women, children and old people were evacuated. The victims and their families are still haunted by such genocide as well as by the slowness of responsibility and the search for the truth. We cannot wait any longer: justice must be done". This has been stated by Nils Muižnieks, commissioner for human rights at the Council of Europe, as he attended the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide (in Bosnia Herzegovina). "As we commemorate the victims of Srebrenica today, we must not forget that tomorrow – the commissioner pointed out – we have to keep trying to find the truth and fight against impunity for serious breaches of human rights". "The crimes that were committed here – Muižnieks mentioned – were so atrocious that we cannot let one single offender escape justice; this is the least we can do to help all the victims and their families find peace and get back their human dignity".
