” “"False pandemics: a threat to health" is one of the main points on the agenda of the plenary meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), opening in Strasbourg today (until January 29th). The Welfare Commission at PACE proposed a debate through an urgent procedure on the matter. If the Assembly takes up such proposal, the debate will take place on January 28th. In the meantime, tomorrow, January 26th, the Commission will arrange an audition behind closed doors on the same matter with delegates from the World Health Organisation, the European Pharmaceutical industry and industry experts. Other points on the agenda include gender discrimination, the fight against the trade of humans, the situation of the Middle East, religious freedom and other human rights of non-Muslim minorities in Thrace (Eastern Greece), the respect of the media’s freedom, corruption in the judiciary, and the detention of asylum seekers and illegal migrants, as well as the operation of democratic institutions in Albania and Bosnia Herzegovina. In addition, since Lluís Maria de Puig’s term is about to expire, the Assembly will have to appoint its new president. So far, the only nominee is the Turkish Mevlüt Çavuþoðlu.
