SECURITY: KALLAS (COMMISSION), "A EU REGULATION ON BODY SCANNERS"

"Body scanners are not the panacea for airline security, although they can help. Nonetheless, "the EU should agree common rules on the issue", said Transport Commissioner-designate Siim Kallas during his three-hour hearing before the European Parliament’s Transport Committee. The Estonian Candidate discussed the matters raised by the MEPs on infrastructure, transport pollution, and security. Concerning the use of body scanners for airline security, Mr Kallas said it is disappointing that "some Member States already use" them "in the absence of any EU common standards". During the hearing, much of the focus was on the need to cut the transport sector’s greenhouse gas emissions, on rail liberalization, as well as on the definition of competences in this area at European level. Mr Kallas also focused on "environmental and social standards" and "business competitiveness" in the transport field. ” ” ” “
