EU: WALLSTROM (COMMISSION), "EUROPE DIRECT FILLS THE INFORMATION GAP BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AND CITIZENS"

The number of opportunities for EU citizens to receive suggestions, practical notes and advice on the ways through which they may assert their rights in the European community increases. The Commission actually inaugurates the "second generation" of the Europe Direct network. "The public will thus be able to address one of the five hundred centres", scattered in the territories of the twenty-seven countries, "to obtain answers to their specific questions relating to the Union. Moreover, the Europe Direct centres supply common institutions with "feedbacks of citizens, and actively promote local and regional debate on the issues" concerning integration. Apart from the presence of branches in all member States (geographical presence available at the Internet address http://ec.europa.eu/europedirect), the service may be reached through toll-free number 00800 6 7 8 9 10 11. "In the last four years – said Margot Wallstrom, vice president of the Executive – the Europe Direct information centres filled the information gap between the institutions of the Union and the public".
